Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. She worked as night nurses to afford her mother the space she required during the day for the love of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay quickly fell in love with that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art is a great tool for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught her to say something through the art of. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma, and later directed the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was told to examine the garbage of a jury member's home. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
